Liturgy & Music

One definition of liturgy is “the work of the people”, and it reminds us that worship is something a whole congregation takes up together. We stand, we kneel, we sit; we sing, we speak, we listen. The liturgy involves us all. And the liturgy involves all of ourselves.

We invite the full participation of all people in our worship, regardless of their age, family situation, or social status. On a typical Sunday you will find longtime members and relative newcomers, singles, divorced people, and parents with small children.

What Happens on Sunday

We offer three different worship services on Sunday, each of which is focused on the Eucharist, or what others might call Holy Communion or Mass. Everyone is invited to receive Holy Communion.

  • 8 a.m. - Holy Eucharist in traditional language (Rite I in the Book of Common Prayer) and with organ music. The service lasts about 45 minutes, and is followed by breakfast in our fellowship hall for anyone who wants to eat.
  • 10:30 a.m. - Holy Eucharist (Rite II in the Book of Common Prayer) with music, congregational hymns, and choir. The use of classical church music is one of the primary ways in which we worship at this service. The service lasts about an hour.
  • 6 p.m. - Holy Eucharist with contemporary inclusive language (from Enriching Our Worship and other resources) that lasts about 30 minutes. We encourage people to dress casually.
  • 6:45 p.m. - Compline, a chanted service of evening prayers led by the Christ Church Compline Choir. The service lasts about 20 minutes.

Christ Church is open during business hours each Monday through Friday. People are welcome to come in to the church to pray, meditate, or light a candle if they wish.

Wednesday Healing Prayers and Eucharist

On Wednesday at 12:05 p.m. we celebrate the Eucharist in our chapel and have prayers for healing. Anyone is welcome to come to the altar rail for prayers for healing for themselves or others. The service lasts about 30 minutes and is an ideal way for people who work downtown to spend part of their lunch hour.
